Self-Activating Flood Barrier Commissioning
Flow Defence provides commissioning support for self-activating flood barrier systems used in basement entries, driveways and other flood-prone access points.
Our commissioning process is designed to confirm the barrier system has been installed correctly, critical components are in place and the system is ready for handover.
We support commissioning for both:
- precast concrete chamber installations
- cast in-situ concrete chamber installations
Commissioning Confirms the System is Ready for Handover
Commissioning is the final stage of the installation process. It focuses on checking the completed flood barrier system, confirming key components are correctly fitted and preparing the system for practical use.
This includes seal alignment, barrier clearances, guide components, electrical coordination and other final completion items required before handover.
What Our Commissioning Process Covers
Seal and Barrier Checks
We check the alignment of the vertical seals, horizontal support angles and barrier spacing to confirm the system has been installed correctly.
Guide and Top Plate Checks
We position the top plate guide lugs and confirm the HDPE slider is trimmed to suit the seal arrangement and barrier movement.
Completion Items
We coordinate final completion requirements including electrical connections and warning light interface with the client.
Handover Readiness
Once commissioning items are complete, the system is prepared for building handover and ongoing site use.
Typical Commissioning Items Include
- alignment of vertical seal angles
- silicone application and fixing of seal components
- installation of horizontal support angles
- confirmation of even barrier spacing between side walls
- positioning of top plate guide lugs
- trimming and fitting of HDPE slider
- installation of top plate guide lug fixings
- coordination of final electrical connections
- coordination of warning light connection with the client
Precast Concrete Chamber Commissioning
For precast concrete chamber projects, commissioning is generally completed on a separate site visit.
This is because the chamber is installed first, and the surrounding side walls are typically constructed after the chamber has been placed. The final commissioning works cannot be completed until those side walls are in place and ready to receive the seal and guide components.
This makes precast commissioning a staged process that depends on overall construction sequencing.
Cast In-Situ Concrete Chamber Commissioning
For cast in-situ concrete chamber projects, commissioning can often be completed during the same site visit as the flood barrier installation.
This is possible where the side walls have already been constructed before the flood barrier installation begins. In that case, the final commissioning items can be completed without waiting for additional wall works or a return visit.
Where the side walls are not yet ready, commissioning may still need to be completed at a later stage.

Barrier Operation During Testing
The self-activating flood barrier is designed to float when water enters the chamber and rises to the required level.
As part of our commissioning process, Flow Defence does not float the barrier during testing.
If the client wishes to observe the barrier rising, this can be carried out separately by isolating the pumps and filling the chamber using a hose or water truck once site conditions are suitable.
Provided the barrier is unobstructed and no load is placed on top of it, the barrier will float as intended.
